New Miner Safety Trainings
Part 46
All new miners are required to undergo the mandatory 24-hour training units to safely and legally work at shell dredging, sand, gravel, surface stone, surface clay, colloidal phosphate, and surface limestone mines.
All new miners include:
- any operator or supervisor, who works at a mine and who is engaged in mining operations. This definition includes independent contractors and employees of independent contractors who are engaged in mining operations
- any construction worker who is exposed to hazards of mining operations.
Part 48
MSHA requires all new miners to participate in a 24-hour training program to work at coal mines, underground metal, and nonmetal mines, surface metal mines, and certain surface nonmetal mines.
All new miners include:
- any person working in a surface mine or surface areas of an underground mine and who is engaged in the extraction and production process, or
- any person engaged in shaft or slope construction, or
- any person who is regularly exposed to mine hazards, or
- any person who is a maintenance or service worker employed by the operator or a maintenance or service worker contracted by the operator to work at the mine for frequent or extended period
Annual Refresher Trainings
Part 46
As part of the Mine Safety and Health Administration's training plans, all experienced miners and mine-site employees must participate annually in a minimum of 8 hours of refresher training. This course covers crucial safety and health topics applicable to shell dredging, sand, gravel, surface stone, surface clay, colloidal phosphate, and surface limestone mines.
Part 48
Any person who is subject to the initial Part 48, 24-hour training is required to participate in a minimum of 8 hours of annual training under MSHA regulations. This refresher course covers important safety and health reminders directly applicable to coal mines, underground metal and nonmetal mines, surface metal mines, and certain surface nonmetal mines.
