  • Any person working in surface mine or surface areas of an underground mine and who is engaged in the extraction and production process, or
  • Any person engaged in shaft or slope construction, or
  • Any person who is regularly exposed to mine hazards, or
  • Any person who is a maintenance or service worker employed by the operator or a maintenance or service worker contracted by the mine for frequent or extended periods

The duration of this course is 24 instructional hours and is required for all new mining employees.

MSHA Part 48 is a regulation set by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) that helps ensure the safety and health of new miners in the United States. Part 48 specifically pertains to the training and retraining of miners who work at metal and nonmetal mines.

Under Part 48, mine operators are required to provide new miners with a specific amount of training before they begin work. This training is designed to familiarize new miners with the hazards and risks associated with their work and to teach them how to work safely. The content of this training must be specific to the mine site and the tasks that the miner will be performing.

In addition to the initial training that is required for new miners, Part 48 also requires mine operators to provide ongoing training throughout a miner's employment. This helps ensure that miners stay up-to-date on the latest safety practices and procedures and can respond effectively to any changes in the work environment.

By complying with Part 48, mine operators can help protect the safety and health of new miners and reduce the risk of accidents and injuries in their operations. This is particularly important for new miners, who may not have the experience necessary to avoid injury.
